Is the SMS nut (type SN) made of stainless steel AISI 304 suitable for seawater or coastal applications?

No. The SMS nut (type SN) made of stainless steel AISI 304 is not recommended for seawater or coastal applications. AISI 304 offers good corrosion resistance in many environments, but it lacks sufficient resistance to chloride-induced corrosion (pitting and crevice corrosion) typical of seawater and salty coastal atmospheres. For marine or coastal use, higher-alloy stainless steels such as AISI 316 (containing molybdenum) or even more corrosion-resistant grades (e.g., duplex or super-austenitic alloys) are the appropriate choice. If you must use SMS nut, stainless steel, type SN in such environments, consider protective measures (robust coatings, cathodic protection, frequent inspection and maintenance) but the preferred solution is to select a more suitable base material.

Can the SMS nut stainless steel type SN resist corrosion from chlorides and salt spray over extended periods?

SMS nut stainless steel type SN: Made from AISI 304 stainless steel, this nut offers good general corrosion resistance, including moderate resistance to chlorides and salt spray. However, AISI 304 is not highly resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in aggressive chloride-rich environments (sea water, prolonged salt spray). For extended exposure to chlorides or continuous salt spray, corrosion may occur over time; for improved long-term resistance, consider AISI 316 or higher-grade duplex/superaustenitic alloys. In short: suitable for occasional or mild chloride exposure, but not recommended for prolonged, aggressive salt environments without upgraded material.

Does the SMS nut stainless steel type SN meet marine-grade standards for long-term outdoor exposure?

No. SMS nut, stainless steel, type SN made from AISI 304 stainless steel does not meet the highest marine-grade standards for long-term outdoor exposure in aggressive marine environments. AISI 304 (EN 1.4301) offers good corrosion resistance in many atmospheres and is suitable for general outdoor use and mild coastal conditions. However, it is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments (sea spray, saltwater, humid coastal air). For prolonged exposure to marine environments, higher-alloy stainless steels such as AISI 316 (containing molybdenum) or specialized duplex/super duplex grades are recommended because they provide significantly better resistance to chloride-induced corrosion. If the application involves constant wetting, immersion in seawater, or long-term heavy coastal exposure, choose a nut specified as marine-grade (e.g., AISI 316) or apply additional protective measures (coatings, sacrificial anodes, frequent maintenance). For intermittent outdoor use away from strong salt influence, SMS nut, stainless steel, type SN (AISI 304) can be acceptable.
