Claw couplings – general information

Claw couplings are broadly used for air and water in industry and construction. Both halves of the coupling are exactly the same – no distinction between a coupler and an adapter. They have two lugs (claws) each, which engage in the corresponding notches of the opposite half. That is why they can be connected so easily – just by pushing two part together and turning. However, only the elements of the same type, with the same claw distance can be interconnected. The claw couplings are divided into the following types:

  • claw distance 42 mm – typical European compressed air couplings;
  • claw distance 40 mm – typical water couplings, also called GEKA couplings;
  • claw distance 41 mm – American compressed air couplings (US type);

The claw couplings are made of zinc-plated cast iron, brass, stainless steel and always come with an oil resistant NBR rubber seal (Viton for stainless steel).

Our product range includes:

  • couplings with a hose tail (from 10 to 38 mm);
  • couplings with male or female thread;
  • blank caps;
  • Y fittings fitted with couplings.

The claw couplings are assembled to hoses with malleable iron hose clamps or other clamps.

The claw couplings cover such applications as: compressed air transfer, connecting pneumatic tools and pneumatic systems, water systems in the industry, at construction sites, agriculture and horticulture.

Claw couplings with claw (lug) distance 42 mm are mainly designed for compressed air. The following versions are available:

  • standard claw couplings 42 mm made of zinc-plated cast iron, working pressure 10 bar, with oil resistant NBR rubber seal; optionally available with pin holes to secure the connection by inserting a safety pin;
  • claw couplings 42 mm made of zinc-plated cast iron, working pressure 10 bar, with brass seal on a flexible rubber ring which facilitates connection to the other half of the coupling with the rubber seal;
  • claw couplings 42 mm made of zinc-plated cast iron, working pressure 16 bar, with oil resistant NBR rubber seal and a safety locking ring to protect against unintended disconnection;
  • claw couplings 42 mm made of brass, working pressure 10 bar, with oil resistant NBR rubber seal;
  • claw couplings 42 mm made of stainless steel, working pressure 16 bar, with Viton seal;

The range of products comprises:

  • couplings with a hose tail (also a version with a lock – a retaining collar);
  • male or female thread couplings;
  • Y fittings with couplings;
  • blank caps;
  • seals.

The claw couplings are assembled to hoses with malleable iron hose clamps or other clamps. The claw couplings 42 mm are widely used for compressed air applications, connecting pneumatic tools, compressors and pneumatic systems, in industry, workshops and at construction sites.

Claw couplings with claw (lug) distance 41 mm – American standard (US type, Chicago, Air King). Made of zinc-plated cast iron, with pin holes to insert a safety pin. Oil resistant rubber seal. Working pressure 10 bar.

Available couplings:

  • with a hose tail with a lock – a security collar);
  • with NPT female thread;
  • with NPT male thread;
  • blank caps.

The claw couplings 41 mm are used in construction and industry for compressed air in the equipment made in the U.S.

Claw couplings with claw (lug) distance 40 mm, also known as GEKA couplings. This type is of the most popular water couplings used in all industry sectors, at construction sites, in gardening.

Made of forged brass as standard. Stainless steel version is also available. Working pressure 16 bar (10 bar for certain types). Equipped with NBR rubber seal (Viton for stainless steel).

The range includes:

  • couplings with a hose tail (also a version with a safety locking ring and swivel coupling 360°);
  • female or male thread couplings;
  • Y fittings fitted with couplings;
  • water nozzles;
  • blank caps;
  • seals.

The claw couplings are assembled to hoses with clamps.

FAQ – Claw couplings:

Is the claw distance important when it comes to claw couplings?2023-08-18T13:44:36+02:00

The claw distance does matter, as there are different types of claw couplings. The most popular claw distance is 42mm, 41mm and 40mm (so-called GEKA couplings). Never join couplings with different claw distance.

Is the type of material of the claw coupling relevant?2023-08-18T13:44:04+02:00

Yes, it is. Before choosing the material, it is necessary to determine what medium these couplings will be used for. Standard coupling materials include zinc-plated cast iron, brass and stainless steel. In addition, the sealing material must be chosen: NBR or Viton.

How are the claw couplings joined together?2023-08-18T13:43:34+02:00

Claw couplings (with the same claw distance) are connected by pressing two couplings against each other and rotating. The claws engage in the gaps in the claws of the opposite half.
